Nära is a messenger built around in-person handshakes. We collect only the data needed to operate the service.
Data we collect
When you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive:
- A unique identifier from Apple or Google (the "OIDC subject")
- Your display name (you can edit it in Settings)
- Optionally your email address, if you choose to share it via Sign in with Apple. We do not use the email for marketing.
When you complete a handshake with another Nära user, we store:
- A "contact edge" linking your account to theirs
- A randomly generated channel ID for the conversation
- A glyph seed used to render a visual identifier
- The date and time of the handshake (no GPS coordinates)
- A public encryption key you generate on your device (the private key never leaves your device — it is kept in the iOS Keychain)
Messages you send pass through and are stored by Stream Chat (getstream.io), our messaging infrastructure provider, on our behalf. Messages are linked to your account and to your contact's account. You can delete a conversation at any time from inside the app, which removes the channel for both you and your contact.
We send push notifications via Apple Push Notification service (APNs). For this we store the device push token Apple issues us.
Data we do not collect
- We do not access your iOS Contacts.
- We do not access your location.
- We do not access your camera or photo library (1.0 is text-only).
- The brief (~200 ms) audio sample captured during a handshake is processed in-memory on your device and never written to disk, never transmitted, and never stored.
- We do not use third-party analytics or advertising SDKs.
- We do not sell or share data with data brokers.
Sub-processors
- Stream (getstream.io) — message storage, push fan-out
- Supabase (supabase.com) — Postgres database for the contact graph
- Apple — Sign in with Apple, APNs
- Google — Sign in with Google
- Fly.io — application server hosting
- Vercel — hosting for this website
Retention
- Account: kept until you delete it (Settings → Delete Account).
- Messages: kept until you delete the conversation, or until your contact deletes it (delete is mutual).
- Crash logs (via Apple TestFlight / App Store): retained per Apple's policy.
Your rights
To delete your account, open Settings → Delete Account inside the app, or email hello@air.city. Account deletion removes your record from our database, your contact edges, your public keys, and your push tokens. Messages already delivered to other users' devices may persist there until those users delete the conversation.
To request an export of your data, email hello@air.city.
